Social Service | Term 1 Update

Relay For Life

On Saturday the 1st of April, a team of over 40 Mac.Rob students participated in Relay for Life at Auburn High School. Relay for Life is a worldwide initiative held by each nation’s respective cancer organisation. In Australia, the event raises funds for the Cancer Council, which aims to augment research, prevention and support for those affected by cancer throughout the nation.

This year, Mac.Rob students, as well as those from fellow selective entry high schools, namely Melbourne High, Suzzane Cory High School and Nossal High School, spent their time outdoors, completing laps, socialising and encouraging fellow peers on the oval for over 10 hours!

With immense pleasure, we are proud to announce that the Mac.Rob Relay for Life team has raised over $7000 for the Cancer Council, the highest amount ever raised as a community! We are only hopeful this will continue to rise as support for the initiative cumulatively rises at Mac.Rob.

We are also very excited to announce that our massive fundraising amount has earned Mac.Rob the Research Award. This award will give the Mac.Rob community an opportunity to decide which cancer type they would like their donations to be directed to. We are tremendously proud of this achievement and look forward to deciding which cancer type our donations will go to next term.

Amani C, Social Service Co-Captain, comments her experience at the event:

“I participated in Relay For Life where I raised funds for the Cancer Council to support cancer patients. Participating in this event gave me the opportunity to enjoy a fun filled day of activities with my friends as we walked laps around the Auburn High School oval. I feel great knowing that my participation in this event has contributed to making overt change in society.”

World’s Greatest Shave

On Monday, March 27th, the Mac.Rob community enjoyed watching the World’s Greatest Shave, an event organised by our Social Service team! An initiative established by the Leukaemia Foundation, the World’s Greatest Shave is supported by thousands of Australians who bravely take on the challenge of cutting, shaving or colouring their hair to raise funds to fight against blood cancer.

For Mac.Rob, this event followed the journey of 11 participants who generously donated their hair to raise $6000 for the initiative, the highest amount ever raised at Mac.Rob! We are overwhelmingly proud of our participants, Movindhie G, Jessamine L, Anh-Thu N, Jenny L, Varada L, Nishka K, Hayley C, Ms. Mori, Ms. Tao, Ms. Rose, and Sandy S, who shaved her head! We hope everyone is satisfied with their new look, but even more so knowing that they are stepping stones to providing invaluable relief to families affected by blood cancer.

The event was accompanied by a bake stall brimming with scrumptious, tasty treats, prepared by the participants themselves as well as the Social Service team. Boppy music played whilst a crowd gathered to support their fellow peers supporting the World’s Greatest Shave initiative. We can’t wait to see what the event will bring next year!

Bake Stalls

Every Friday, Mac.Rob students will have the sweet opportunity to raise money for a charity whilst enjoying delicious treats prepared by a Connect class. Bake stalls have been a long standing tradition at Mac.Rob, and this year, are the pinnacle event to end off everyone’s week, students and teachers alike! Social Service representatives of each Connect carefully organise and ensure the running of their bake stall reach fundraising goals and all visitors leave satisfied.

All funds raised from bake stalls are donated to a charity nominated by each year level. This year, these charities are: Year 9s for RSPCA, Year 10s for Barnardos, Year 11s for UNHCR, and Year 12s for Red Cross. Donations each support different visions proposed by charities, and so, all students at Mac.Rob are able to provide support to a plethora of causes by simply bringing a treat to sell at their bake stall!

Students also enjoy the opportunity to collaborate with peers in their Connect, and interact with students who come to purchase food from the bake stalls. Whether one is purchasing or bringing food to the bake stall, every student is a contributor to supporting charities throughout Australia!

This year, the Social Service portfolio kicked off the 2023 bake stall season with a Social Service Cabinet bake stall. The bake stall was a huge success, with the team raising over $300. We were overwhelmed with the support from students and can’t wait to see all the amazing bake stalls throughout the year.
