Year 10 Student Mentoring Program

On August 4th, seven Year 10s made their way to South Melbourne Park Primary School to offer their advice on the transition from primary to secondary school. Sessions were conducted over  six weeks and focused on different topics like building connections, high school life, success in Year 7 and leadership.

The Mac.Rob X South Melbourne Park Primary School Grade 6 Mentoring Program was an incredible experience for us to provide a comfortable space for Grade 6s at SMPPS to feel supported and build confidence. As the transition was a significant change and was filled with many uncertainties, we understood the emotions of trepidation and enthusiasm that the younger students were feeling. For us, it was an opportunity to develop our leadership skills by offering guidance to our younger peers. The advice we gave helped to enrich our empathy, compassion, interpersonal capabilities, and communication.

We also were able to provide valuable insight into the skills, habits and attributes required to succeed in secondary school. The experience was exhilarating and fascinating for us mentors, as the high-spirited students were so excited to interact with us. Over the three sessions, we truly got to know the students and answered a myriad of questions, ranging from if they had cafeterias to if we got frequent pop quizzes. (We told them no and that they were watching too many American movies!)

We sincerely hope that the mentees have benefited from our experiences and had an enjoyable time. We are extremely grateful to Mr. Wood-Davies, who organised this program and the students at SMPPS for participating so eagerly. We hope to see some of them at Mac.Rob in a few years time!
