Primary School Mentorship Programs

South Yarra Primary School

August 5th marked the final session of this term’s South Yarra Primary School Mentorship Program. Held on Thursdays, the program proved to be a tremendous success, offering seventeen Year 10 mentors from our school and sixty-one primary school students an enriching opportunity for learning and connection.

The last session was split into two segments. The first half featured the regular mentorship activities, while the second half allowed mentees to choose and participate in fun games like Charades, Word Search, Hot Seat, Math Bingo, and Pictionary. The students thoroughly enjoyed these activities, fostering a sense of engagement and teamwork within their groups.

To commemorate the end of the program, each mentor presented their mentees with a certificate, a packet of popcorn, and a sheet of stickers. One of our Year 10 students gave a heartfelt thank-you speech to the primary school staff and our team, followed by the presentation of a certificate to Emy Harron, the Grade 5/6 leader, along with a gift to the school.

The primary school captains expressed their gratitude to the mentors, with Grade 6 leader Amy sharing how much the Grade 6 students and their families appreciated the program. The primary school highlighted the importance of having high school mentors to guide the younger students as they prepare for the transition to secondary school. This program provided them with the chance to ask questions and ease any concerns they had about entering high school.

Overall, the mentorship program has been an immensely rewarding experience for our Year 10 students. Not only did they enjoy their time, but they also developed valuable skills as mentors. We eagerly anticipate continuing this partnership in the future.

August 30th marked the successful conclusion of yet another Primary School Mentorship Program with South Melbourne Park Primary School. Throughout the Term, twenty-six Grade 6 students from the primary school were mentored by our Year 10 students, fostering not only valuable skill development but also strong relationships between mentors and mentees.

The final session was especially memorable, ending with an exciting basketball and dodgeball game between the mentors and mentees. It was clear how much the Grade 6 students cherished the experience, as many were sad to see their mentors go.

At the close of the program, both mentors and mentees were awarded certificates, and we presented the primary school with a certificate and a small gift to express our appreciation for this partnership.

The Year 6 leader at South Melbourne Park Primary School expressed gratitude for the collaboration, noting that they had received positive feedback from many parents. The Grade 6 students eagerly looked forward to their Thursday mentoring sessions each week. The school is enthusiastic about continuing this meaningful partnership in the future.
