Philosophy in Focus: Exploring Big Questions at ACMI
The Year 12 VCE Philosophy excursion to ACMI was an enriching and transformative experience for philosophy students from across Victoria. Being grouped with peers from different schools encouraged us to step outside of our comfort zones, fostering open dialogue and the exchange of fresh perspectives. This collaboration brought vibrancy and diversity to our discussions, particularly during the two Community of Inquiry sessions, where we freely conversed about the philosophers we studied throughout the year and how their ideas apply to everyday life.
The gallery’s artworks served as powerful stimuli for reflection, enabling us to bring classroom theories to life. As we examined each piece, the focus wasn’t merely on what we saw, but on the profound questions the art provoked. We engaged in deep, open-ended inquiries into concepts like identity, ethics, and reality, weaving together our interpretations into a shared exploration of these big ideas.
The day concluded fittingly with a philosopher’s panel on ‘the good life’. Listening to seasoned philosophers dissect the elements of a meaningful life made abstract concepts feel more tangible. It left us contemplating how happiness, purpose, and fulfilment might shape our lives, as the panel explored these themes through the lens of virtue and philosophical thought.
