Mac.Rob Mooting 2024
Over the second half of Week 4, students from across all year levels participated in the annual Mac.Rob Mooting competition. Mooting is similar to debating, but is focused on extending students’ skills in relation to legal studies and law. Teams act as legal representatives of parties in a hypothetical legal scenario, with the moot itself simulating an appeal hearing.
In preparation for the competition, participants showed up to the workshops, actively learning how to break down materials, effectively structure their arguments and appropriately use formalities in a courtroom.
“I feel like the 2024 Mooting Competition was a great success. It was greatly organised, and simplified for everyone, allowing even the most beginners in law to participate. The competition actually opened my eyes up a little bit to law as well, showing me how lawyers work. All in all, I would say it went really well!” - Maryam S
The preliminary rounds of the moots were of high quality. External judges from the Umbrella Lawyers, the law firm that had hosted a mentoring program for the school earlier in the year, came in to judge these preliminary rounds. Their feedback was overwhelmingly positive, and we hope that students gained insight into the legal field through this brilliant opportunity. A huge thank you to Jane Libbis, Jonty Simmons and Max Paterson for taking time out of your busy schedules to judge the moots!
Then came the final moot, where the top competitors from the preliminary rounds were invited to participate in a moot with a live audience of Mac.Rob students. The twist was: the participants would be competing on the opposite side that they had presented during preliminary trials.
“Participating in the Mooting Competition allowed me to gain more experience in legal skills and enhanced my understanding of the courtroom environment and procedures.” - Helen L
On the day, everyone spoke their points and argued their hearts out, carefully weaving their way through the tricky questions of the judge, Mr. Corr. The final moot was a huge success with the best of the competitors mooting it out to be the best mooter with Nusayeeba Z, on the respondent’s side, narrowly claiming the title.
On behalf of the Mooting Organising Committee, we thank Mr. Corr for helping us with everything, from the organisation and supervision, to resources and judging. We also extend our gratitude to Ms. Ziyad for connecting us with the Umbrella Lawyers. Finally, alumni and ex-SRC Co-Captain Amanda C provided essential mentorship and guidance, which made this event possible!
