Hydrology & Water Resources Presentation

On August 31st, our Year 10 student Chaitanya (Cherry) presented her research on ‘Wetlands as a Nitrate Removal Method’ at the national Hydrology and Water Resources Symposium (HWRS) held by Engineers Australia. Cherry’s interest in research started about a year ago in 2020 when she first took part in the Australian Junior Water Prize. She has since continued her research journey which led to her presenting her findings at the symposium.

HWRS is a two-day long conference that provides a platform for industry professionals and water researchers from across Australia to showcase their work and connect with others in the field. Cherry was the youngest presenter amongst PhD researchers, university professors, and other water industry experts and received wonderful and positive feedback from many of the conference attendees.

When talking about the experience she mentioned it was a ‘really humbling and insightful experience to share my research with water experts and have them independently review and comment on it’. This project was the result of months of sample collection, testing and analysis and helped Cherry develop her interest and knowledge in environmental science and the scientific process. Alongside her conference presentation, Cherry’s research paper has been accepted as part of the conference proceedings and will be published soon! We are extremely proud of Cherry on this incredible achievement and commend her for all her efforts. On behalf of the school community, we wish her all the very best for her future research endeavors!
