Environment Committee: Succulent Stall

On February 19th, we welcomed staff and students to our first Enviro event for the year - the Succulent Stall!

We had three stations overall. The first was a propagation station, where, if you brought a pot or jar from home, you would get to plant your own succulent for free! We were so glad to see so many students and staff bringing in their own pots and jars and leaving with a newly planted succulent leaf. After a few weeks, these little leaves will have begun to grow little pink roots before a tiny plant begins to sprout, eventually growing into a full succulent.

At  our second stall we sold pre-potted succulents, it was amazing to see everyone so excited to get a (very adorable) succulent. After this, students and staff headed towards our third stall where you had the option to paint your newly acquired pots! Everyone got incredibly creative and we saw some amazing designs going around. To everyone that bought a succulent, be sure to water your succulents every 2-4 weeks, they are very persistent plants but not immortal so make sure they get the nutrients they need.

All money collected from this event will be going towards Climateworks Centre, an organisation that aims to “bridge the gap between research and climate action.” They are an organisation of climate transition specialists for Australia, the Pacific, and Southeast Asia, and a part of the Monash Sustainable Development Institute, who aim to achieve net zero emissions and reach the global goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees celsius.

We aimed to sell these succulents to bring some low-maintenance green into the daily lives of students and staff. With the daily bustle of our lives the small things that give us some reprieve are so valuable. We also hoped to share knowledge, whether it be the process of propagation or creative ways to recycle pots and jars at home, knowing the importance of reducing, reusing, and recycling.

Thank you to everyone who got involved with the day and especially to our Enviro Leaders, Ahn-Thu and Alisa, who pulled this together in such a short amount of time and made it the huge success that it was. We are all super excited to share many more enviro events planned for 2025 so make sure to keep your eyes peeled for announcements!
