Author Talk with Kate Murray

During a windy lunchtime a group of students excitedly awaited the stories of author Kate Murray. The audience listened as two students sat and interviewed the writer of the young adult sci-fi novel ‘We Who Hunt the Hollow’.

Ms. Murray kindly revealed that we were the first of her school visits. Although this seemed to make her nervous, she generously shared detail in a way that put the room at ease. She conveyed to us her writing journey, something she only came to terms with in adulthood, demonstrating that you don’t need to be sure of your future in high school in order to achieve your dreams, even if that means changing paths. She recalled the bumps in the road that came with finishing a manuscript, getting it published and expressing a story that changed a couple times along the way.

Author, Kate Murray, discusses the writing process of her novel, We Who Hunt The Hollow.

The author offered encouraging tips for those in the room who dream of seeing their name on a shelf someday. When the floor was opened up to the audience, the hands were tentative to come up but soon questions flooded in when students noticed the relatability in which Murray spoke to us.

Overall it was encouraging to hear Kate Murray’s story, one of very few published Australian YA sci-fi authors. The school greatly appreciates her donation of a signed copy of ‘We Who Hunt the Hollow’. I highly recommend that students go check it out in the library.
