Sports At Mac.Rob | May Update

House Athletics Carnival

A gloomy Melbourne May morning was no match for the Mac.Rob Athletics Carnival this week, with nothing but clear skies as students took to the track and field at Lakeside Stadium! From relays and high jump, to javelin and shotput, students demonstrated tremendous teamwork and skill both on and off the field, setting personal bests and cheering on their peers from the stands. Incredible work, everyone, and especially to Naiads, who won the Carnival overall!

Australian Swimming Championships & Commonwealth Games Trials

Sienna S, Year 11, is to be commended on her efforts at the 2022 Australian Swimming Championships and Commonwealth Games Trials. Sienna swam in two events, the 100m and 200m backstroke. Despite a short preparation, Siena swam outstandingly well and is the 36th fastest Australian female swimmer in the 100m backstroke (1.06.08 seconds), and placing 28th in the 200m backstroke (2.21.43). Siena loved the experience competing against some of Australia’s best swimmers and is looking forward to more opportunities in the future.

State Softball Champions

On May 25th, Mac.Rob’s Senior Softball team competed in the School Sport Victoria State Championships. The team demonstrated excellent enthusiasm, sportspersonship, and teamwork in each of their games. Their skills were outstanding, hitting home runs, taking catches and fielding very accurately, which allowed them to comprehensively win each of their pool games and progress to the final. The high level of skill continued throughout the final, and Mac.Rob defeated Nossal 10-0 to be crowned State Champions!

Beachside AFL Interschool Competition

At the recent Beachside AFL Interschool Competition, we had approximately 40 Mac.Rob students attend to play in the Intermediate (Year 9 & 10) and Senior (Year 11 & 12) teams. We asked five of the most experienced Year 10s to play in the Senior team to ensure we had enough players, and they happily jumped at the chance. We also had five students volunteer at the last minute to come along and help with running water and goal umpiring.

The Intermediate team played against Prahran and Mentone at Highett Reserve, and fought hard to beat Mentone by 1 point! Meanwhile, the Senior team played against Mentone and Cheltenham at Le Page Park. Mentone were too strong for all Senior teams on the day. Mac.Rob's Senior team showed amazing improvement over both games and outscored Cheltenham in the second half, but Cheltenham ended up taking the win by a narrow margin. Both teams played so well with almost no training leading up to the day, and showed remarkable improvement on the previous years' tournament.

Well done to all players and volunteers who represented Mac.Rob in the Beachside AFL Competition!

Ms. Claire Rollinson, AFL Coach

Ultimate Frisbee State Match

Late last Term, Mac.Rob sent two teams of 8 out to Ross Straw Field for the Victorian Senior Ultimate Frisbee Championships. Each of our teams played against four others from various schools around the state. Both Mac.Rob teams absolutely smashed it and I can confidently say every single person had heaps of fun! The best part of the competition was everyone's cheering and encouragement, which you could hear all throughout the field!

To finish off the day, we met some talented ex-Mac.Robbians who now are national-level players and coaches of the U18’s Victorian Ultimate Frisbee team. Funny how at some point they were just like us, playing for Mac.Rob at a school competition - and now they’ve grown to be champions!

In the end, Mac.Rob placed 1st and 3rd in the government school tournament - an incredible result from both teams! We returned home with happy smiles and another shiny blue banner to add to our collection of sport awards.

Gauri A, Year 11
