Sport Education in Physical Education Program (SEPEP)
During Term 3, all of the Year 9 PE classes are participating in the Sport Education in Physical Education Program (SEPEP). This is a student-lead program which focuses on students taking responsibility for their own physical education, learning, and understanding on how to organise and participate in a given sport, all while appreciating and experiencing the enjoyment of playing a sport with new friends. This year, the Year 9’s are playing “Triball”, a modified version of Lacrosse. This program increases students' leadership capabilities as they learn to take charge, and work as a team without teacher guidance. This allows students to get creative and manage their own games, building new skills outside of physical education and sports. Students get active, create new ideas, and meet new people all through SEPEP!
Students from each class are assigned into teams of five. They have the opportunity to collaborate with one another and play Triball together, as well as make new memories throughout the term with each other. Within these teams, each member chooses a role out of the Captain, Team Manager, Statistician, Media/Publicity Manager, and Governing Body. Each role comes with a unique set of responsibilities.
The Captain has the task of leading the team, organising training sessions and helping the team with new strategies.
The Team Manager is responsible for designing team uniforms and chants, scheduling games, setting up equipment for games and modifying the rules.
The role of the Statistician is to score during games, update the ladder, vote on best and fairest of each game and umpire.
The Media/Publicity Manager is tasked with promoting the team using videos, posters, social media and emails as well as taking photos and designing and updating the SEPEP notice board with their class and team.
The Governing Body is responsible for deciding the rules, creating fixtures, preparing and collecting voting cards and ensuring the games are run smoothly.
All roles are essential to the team, and the team simply wouldn’t function without any of them!
Overall, we have enjoyed partaking in the SEPEP program so far this term as it allows us to work as a team and learn how to play Triball, a new sport for most of us, all while having a sense of competitiveness and enjoyment. Additionally, SEPEP has enhanced bonds between students in their form group, and connect with students in different classes whether it be playing against them or collaborating ideas. Students are able to learn from each other, experience the thrill of a round robin tournament, and build on important skills such as teamwork and communication.
Many past Year 9 students have said that SEPEP was one of their highlights at MacRob, which is why all teams are working hard to make this an event everyone will remember by ensuring fairness in each game and showing good sportsmanship. SEPEP is highly recommended to anyone who's interested in building leadership skills and friendly competition against other teams!
