Premier's Spirit of Democracy Tour

During the Term 1 holidays, the six of us (and Mr. Regalo) participated in a 5-day Melbourne-Canberra study tour that aimed to educate young people about Athenian democracy and build political understanding about our current form of government. We visited locations ranging from the Hellenic Museum, Melbourne Museum, Parliament House in Melbourne, and the High Court, Australian National University, Australian War Memorial and National Portrait Gallery in Canberra, in order to gain new perspectives and develop our understanding of democratic societies.

The curriculum linked workshops and guided tours prompted many insightful ideas for us to ponder, discuss and challenge. It was interesting to explore the influences of Athenian architecture on the construction of the hearts of Victoria and the ACT, as well as analyse how Socratic values shaped modern political practices. On the tour, one main idea we explored was how modern Australia evolved and progressed to the tremendously diverse country it is today. In a truly democratic spirit, we were encouraged to acknowledge our differences, embrace our unique qualities and collaborate to enhance societal values for future generations.

Overall, this was an extremely insightful experience that allowed us to meet like-minded young people from across Melbourne, and develop our understanding of the Australian democratic system. We are so glad to have been able to broaden our horizons and make some long-lasting friendships along the way!
