Parliament House Excursion

Last Term, Mac.Rob’s Year 10 Democracy & Justice class were lucky enough to take a trip straight to the heart of government, the Parliament of Victoria. Braving the unreliable trams in the sweltering heat of Melbourne, we escaped classrooms and assessments to learn about this important institution of Australian democracy. After a thorough security search, we were taken on a tour through the Parliament, starting with the Queen’s Hall where we were greeted by a friendly tour guide, the statue of Queen Victoria and 19 paintings of past Victorian Premiers.

We walked through the Legislative Assembly next, which was bright — a custom taken from the Westminster Parliament to represent the greens where the House of Commons used to gather. Likewise, the Senate was painted a deep red and was a little smaller, complete with sculpted cherubs in the crown moulding! We were even able to sit in both chambers, amongst recent Acts of Parliament, where actual members of the Parliament sit! We were most impressed by the detailed architecture — ornate gold, cream and even mint green designs — which was heavily inspired by British Victorian architecture.

We are extremely grateful to have the opportunity to visit the Parliament and this experience has deepened our civic knowledge of the government of Australia, making us informed citizens. So if you have a specific question about the 36th Premier of Victoria or anything related to the Parliament of Victoria, 10HDJ01 is here to answer!
