Maths Games Day 2022
Year 9 and Year 10 MacRob students recently took part in Maths Games Day at Balwyn High. The day started off rainy, and as we rushed from the tram stop to the school we didn’t know what to expect. At first, we thought it would be a serious, test-like situation, where teachers would observe which students could do a maths equation the fastest.
But the ‘Maths Games’ didn’t need students to know calculus or all the digits of pi, rather, the questions and tasks required a combination of creative thinking and logical reasoning, as well as collaboration. The prompts provided an engaging way for us to work with and compete against other students with a similar passion for maths, and to also challenge our minds to step out of the theoretical limitations of what we learn in our classrooms.
There were two ways to compete in the event: Individual competitions, where the 4 students in each team would find different competitors to play some fun games against to win points (or platinum) for our respective teams; and the second was Team Collaboration. Our favourite was the team tasks because we were able to use our individual strengths together to solve problems, and it led to a lot of ‘that’s it!’ and ‘you’re a genius!’ moments.
MacRob was also able to achieve victory, a group of Year 10s (Jennis M, Nishi K, Muntaha Y and Diya A) acquiring the most ‘platinum’ by the end of the day.
All in all, despite the gloomy weather, we certainly had lots of fun and would definitely do it again!
