Mac.Rob World Cup
In accordance with Australia and New Zealand hosting the 2023 Women’s World Cup, Mac.Rob decided to hold its own Soccer World Cup, with teams representing over 10 countries…
Teams of six were mixed with both teachers and students, who represented 12 different countries including France, Netherlands, Brazil, Panama, Costa Rica, New Zealand, Japan, Switzerland, China, Vietnam, Sweden (sponsored by IKEA), and Australia.
The rules were simple: futsal, but with no goalkeeper; no player was allowed in the penalty area. Despite this seemingly comprehensible rule, there were a number of repeat offenders (all of whom taught for a living), but nonetheless made the games more interesting!
After two lunchtimes of fierce competition, the rounds of finals took place in the gym. It was Brazil vs Panama to battle it out for 3rd and 4th place, and the grand finals China vs Japan. After TWO thrilling sudden death penalty shootouts, the results declared Japan as the overall champion of the Mac.Rob World Cup!
Congratulations to Japan’s team: Mimi G, Nusaybah S, Anya P, Maggie U, Lochana K, Sawaki Sensei, and Ms. Toohey! And, as Japan plays in the Quarter-Finals against Sweden on August 11th, it can be wondered if the power of the Mac.Rob World Cup has manifested Japan’s victory… How interesting?
Another shout out to all the fantastic MVPs of all the matches, the wild spectators and everyone who made this tournament possible, including the Wellbeing and Health and PE Departments and the IB Student Helpers!
