Climate Science Olympiad

This semester I was fortunate enough to participate in the International Climate Science Olympiad through the Environment Committee. This Olympiad focused on empowering youth to find solutions to problems associated with climate change.

When I was doing the qualifiers quiz, I was quite reluctant. Then I got through to the quarter-finals. Again, there was another quiz that I had to do in my free time. When I got through to the semi-finals it was then I saw this as an amazing opportunity to build my understanding and use my skills to learn about ways to prevent the effects of climate change. I was given a prompt and had to write a case study analysing a solution given to me. I then had to write a 1000-word essay guided by questions in 3 hours. I have to say, it was a challenging experience but very enjoyable.

After three weeks of eagerly waiting for the results of the semi-finals with no hope of getting to the finals, the results arrived. I had made it to the top 100! When the time came I had one week to write a 3000-word essay, proposing a solution to an issue in the world caused by climate change. On top of that, we had to create a 15-minute presentation addressing the essay to further support the proposal.

Through this wonderful experience, I was able to be a part of a global action all because of the opportunity given to me by the Environment Committee. Being able to learn about the perspectives of those in the community as well as my fellow finalists, pushed me to think out of the box and strive for my best!
