Class of 2023 | Year 12 Reflection

Dear Class of 2023,

I remember the first day of Year 9, slightly lost making my way around the Kingsway building, but mostly filled with buzz. We received our timetables, bonded over as a Connect, and sat in the stately hall in our oversized blazers that we were promised that we were soon going to fill and ‘grow into’. The older students warned us to ‘never use the forbidden staircase!’ and to ‘never catch tram 58!’ - which admittedly, I have caught unintentionally on multiple occasions and am too embarrassed to say I have done in my final year as a year twelve.

We experienced a tumultuous couple of years through sporadic lockdowns- I remember as soon as we finished our Maths competition, the PA system echoed the beginning of a lockdown. This was the mark of an era of making the Tik Tok sensation, dalgona coffee and trying our best to keep up with Chloe Ting workouts on Youtube. As we returned to normality for our first year into VCE, or our inaugural IB class, we were faced with spending our time studying in a tent, but nevertheless, thrilled to spend time back with our friends and making the most of our high school years. We collectively shared each other's highs and lows - including watching the adorable penguins waddle onto the night shore at camp.

But nevertheless, we made it Class of 2023!

Before embarking on the treacherous exam season, there was no better alternative than our Celebration Day. The eventful day began with a lively ambience, with our supportive staff cooking up a delectable pancake breakfast. We soon filed into the gym where we awaited a karaoke machine- ready for you to sing our hearts out and a dance dance revolution machine to bust out our dance moves. Amongst the excitement, we concluded with our farewell assembly where we celebrated amongst the shower of colourful balloons and confidently sang the chorus of Potens Sui; We soon lined up to zoom through the guard of honour which we formed in our past years but finally got to be the one who ran under it. This concluded our final times on our school grounds we grew up on.

Through a flurry of events, we finally ended our high school chapter, with an elegant graduation at the Pullman, with the bewitching night atmosphere and how glamorous everyone looked, all grown up from their year nine self. As we walked across the stage, a firm handshake with one hand and the other, holding our graduation certificate, we acknowledged that all the tremendous efforts, hard work, and discipline had finally paid off.

Although the past few years have quickly passed, our memories formed will be cherished to last a lifetime and beyond. I am excited to see what is in store for each and every one of you- I’m confident to see your grand successes and where life will take you.

Goodbye and good luck,

Sydney L (12C) | SRC Executive
